Brown noise and ADHD
Brown noise went viral when people with ADHD started describing how a deep, steady rumble seemed to "quiet" their busy minds. This page explains why people say it helps, what the research does and doesn't show, and how to try it for yourself.
Important: brown noise is not a treatment for ADHD and this page is not medical advice. If you think you have ADHD, or want help managing it, please speak to your GP or a qualified professional.
Does brown noise help with ADHD?
Many people with ADHD report that brown noise helps them focus, settle into a task or block out distractions. That is personal experience, not proof. Research into noise and attention is still limited, and results vary from person to person.
What does the research say?
Most studies so far used white noise rather than brown. One often-cited study (Söderlund, Sikström and Smart, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2007) found that background white noise improved memory task performance in a small group of children with ADHD, while it worsened performance in children without ADHD. That suggests noise affects people differently. There is very little research on brown noise specifically.
Why do people prefer brown noise over white noise?
Brown noise is mostly low-pitched, so it feels deep and soft rather than hissy. Many people find it less tiring over long sessions, and it has no melody or lyrics to pull attention away.
How should I try brown noise for focus?
Pick one task, set the player timer for 25 to 60 minutes, start at a low volume and raise it only until background noise fades. Try it for a week and notice whether it helps. If it doesn't, that is fine: silence or other sounds may suit you better. Our brown noise for focus and brown noise for studying guides have more tips.
Is it safe to listen for hours?
Keep the volume modest, especially with headphones, and take breaks. Read our safe listening guidance.
