Brown noise and tinnitus
Important: this page is general information, not medical advice. Brown noise does not treat or cure tinnitus. If your tinnitus is new, in one ear only, pulsing in time with your heartbeat, or comes with hearing loss, pain or dizziness, see your GP promptly. The British Tinnitus Association is an excellent source of reliable help.
Tinnitus is the experience of hearing sounds such as ringing, hissing or buzzing that don't come from outside. It is very common, and it often feels most noticeable in a quiet room, for example when you are trying to fall asleep. Many people find that having some gentle background sound makes their tinnitus feel less prominent. This idea, often called "sound enrichment", is widely discussed by tinnitus charities and audiologists.
Why some people choose brown noise
Different sounds suit different people. Some tinnitus is high-pitched, and some people find a bright white noise covers it best. Others find white noise harsh and prefer the deeper, softer sound of brown noise, or a nature sound like rain. The aim of sound enrichment is usually not to drown the tinnitus out completely. Instead it is to make the background less silent, so the tinnitus stands out less. That is why the volume should usually sit below the level of the tinnitus, not above it.
Practical tips
- Keep it quiet. Loud sound can make hearing problems worse. A soft, comfortable level is the goal.
- Use a speaker at night rather than earbuds where possible, so you're not wearing them for hours.
- Try a few sounds. Compare brown, pink and white noise, and rain, over several days. Notice which feels most comfortable rather than which "covers" the most.
- Use a timer if you like. Some people prefer sound until they fall asleep; others prefer it all night.
Getting proper support
If tinnitus is affecting your sleep, mood or concentration, you don't have to put up with it alone. Your GP can refer you to audiology services, where specialists can offer assessment and approaches such as counselling and sound therapy tailored to you. Charity helplines can also help. Background noise from this site can be part of your toolkit, but it isn't a substitute for that support.
